Firebirds: An Anthology of Original Fantasy and Science Fiction

About the Author

Few writers have inspired as much affection and interest among readers young and old as Lloyd Alexander, and few writers have won so many literary honors. Most of his books have been written in the form of fantasy. But fantasy, Alexander believes, is merely one of many ways to express attitudes and feelings about real people, real human relationships and problems. "My concern is how we learn to be genuine human beings. I never have found out all I want to know about writing and realize I never will. All that writers can do is keep trying to say what is deepest in their hearts. If writers learn more from their books than do readers, perhaps I may have begun to learn."Meredith Ann Pierce is one of America's premiere fantasy writers.  Along with her Darkangel books, the Firebringer Trilogy is among her best and most well-known work-but it has never been in paperback.  This classic saga of Jan, the warrior unicorn prince and his herd's only hope, is compelling reading for horse lovers, fantasy fans, and anyone who relishes a crackling good adventure.  Meredith Ann pierce lives in Micanopy, Florida.Michael Cadnum is the award-winning author of more than a dozen books for adults and young adults, including the contemporary novels Rundown, Heat, and Edge (all Viking) and the historical novel In a Dark Wood (Orchard/Puffin). Michael Cadnum lives in Albany, California.Nancy Springer has published forty novels for adults, young adults and children. In a career beginning shortly after she graduated from Gettysburg College in 1970, Springer wrote for ten years in the imaginary realms of mythological fantasy, then ventured on contemporary fantasy, magical realism, and women's fiction before turning her attention to children's literature. Her novels and stories for middle-grade and young adults range from contemporary realism, mystery/crime, and fantasy to her critically acclaimed novels based on the Arthurian mythos, I AM MORDRED: A TALE OF CAMELOT and I AM MORGAN LE FAY. Springer's children's books have won her two Edgar Allan Poe awards, a Carolyn W. Field award, various Children's Choice honors and numerous ALA Best Book listings. Her most recent series include the Tales of Rowan Hood, featuring Robin Hood’s daughter, and the Enola Holmes mysteries, starring the much younger sister of Sherlock Holmes.Ms. Springer lives in East Berlin, Pennsylvania.Patricia A. McKillip is a winner of the World Fantasy Award, and the author of many fantasy novels, including The Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy, Stepping from the Shadows, and The Cygnet and the Firebird. She lives in Oregon.Over the past twenty-four years, Nina Kiriki Hoffman has sold novels, juvenile and media tie-in books, short story collections, and more than two hundred short stories. Her works have been finalists for the Nebula, World Fantasy, Mythopoeic, Sturgeon, and Endeavour awards. Her first novel, The Thread That Binds the Bones, won a Stoker Award. Nina's YA novel Spirits that Walk in Shadow and her science fiction novel Catalyst were published in 2006. Her fantasy novel Fall of Light will be published by Ace Books in May.

I've bought several anthologies as a great way to get to know new authors. Often the include chapters of a newcomers book or that sort of thing. However, these were all short stories that were meant to be short stories (so no reading and coming to the end of a sample chapter and needing to buy a book or series that got less interesting the more you read). These stories were also excellently well written, interesting, with thoughtful topics, novel story lines (in many cases) and great characters. I was really impressed both with the authors and also with the publisher, who sought many of the authors who have published with them before to write something for this.

Great book full of very interesting stories. Perfect for me since I love fiction and fantasy.

This is one of the better anthologies I've read. All anthologies are something of a mixed bag. The reader's taste very seldom meshes exactly with the editor's, or the editor has had to make some compromises along the way. Firebirds is substantially above average. The book is helped, of course, by having some very big names in SFF - Lloyd Alexander, Patricia A. McKillip, Garth Nix, to name a few. Aside from her first couple of books, I've never read anything by McKillip that wasn't terrific, and that's true here. The value of anthologies is in introducing readers to new authors. Here, I read a story ("Beauty") by Sherwood Smith, an author I'd never heard of. I was struck by how well developed the world was for a short story. It turns out that's because it is a well developed world. But I nonetheless immediately went out and bought the related novel, Crown Duel. I'll be looking up Nancy Farmer as well. But this anthology also has some other surprises. "Max Mondrosch" was a startling departure from the Lloyd Alexander of the Chronicles of Prydain, but no less good because of it.The editor says she built the book around a graphic novel by Emma Bull and Charles Vess, and I looked forward to it. I'm sorry to say that that story is by far the weakest in the book. Happily, almost all the other stories range from good to excellent. In short, well worth picking up.

Firebirds is another masterpiece of editing by Sharyn November. I've heard a lot about the horror that is the slush pile, but people like Sharyn seem to keep finding literary gold. Sure, they're supposedly for kids age 12 to 18, but I tend to think that kids that age are better described as "people", and Firebirds is an excellent book for people (and if you're reading this, odds are that you are one).I picked up this anthology because it has a Nina Kiriki Hoffman story in it, and she's one of the few authors for whom I am still something of a raving fan. I read that one first. :)"Flotsam" by Nina Kirki Hoffman is a story about a young boy from another land who winds up in ours and the people that help him out. It's a formula that's been done before, but you know, so was "Fear Street" and Nina Kirki Hoffman managed to write three stories in that trope that were new. She managed to do the same here. What's particularly nice here is that, while there is magic, it's not particularly magical. Though astonishing to the people that have not previously seen it, it's nothing special to the people doing the magic."Cotillion" by Delia Sherman is a remarkably (albeit lantern-hung) variant of Tam Lin. There's nothing very special here, which was surprising, as I generally enjoy her work. Then I got to the end, and it ended correctly, even though it broke the pattern. I appreciate that at lot."The Baby in the Night Deposit Box" by Megan Whalen Turner was wonderful. I shant bore you with a plot-based retelling, so let me just say that it's a story about a small town and their collective love for a child. I mean, sure there's a fairy war with goblins, enslavement and death as well as buracracy on many levels, but that stuff's not important. Really, it's all about love and bunnies... as well it should be."Beauty" by Sherwood Smith felt strange. It was like reading a story that was only half-told. As I read it, I thought that it was a vehicle for a bit of philosophy on pretty people and rightness of action. Then, when I got to the end and read the Author's Note, I saw that it was a sequel of sorts to Crown Duel. It sorta stands on it's own, but I suspect that I would have liked it better had I read the other book first."Mariposa" by Nancy Springer is a story that needed to be written. It's very good and addresses a common social problem in a very matter-of-fact and unusual way. This is one of those that is definitely aimed at the 12-18 age range, but also serves as a good reminder for those of us who are a wee bit older."Max Mondrosch" by Lloyd Alexander is horrifying and nightmarish and should not be read. Really, get out your tape and stick these pages together. Put a PostIt note on the front of the story with the note "Do not open until economy has improved." You'll thank me later. (Oh yeah, it's really good, you just don't want to read it.)"The Fall of Ys" by Meredith Ann Pierce really requires knowledge of Celtic myth. This is one of those sories that should really stand on it's own, but really doesn't. It would be better if it were framed as a story within a story, so that the traditional myth could be briefly retold than this story could be told from a "what really happened" perspective. Maybe there wasn't enough space to do it that way, I don't know. In the end, it was somewhat disapointing."Medusa" by Michael Cadnum was another story that requires knowledge of myth. However, I think that this story still permeates our mainstream culture, so that's OK. Unlike many retellings, it really dwells on the concept that the Greek gods really don't care about humans, so I applaud its historical accuracy as well as the way that it twists the form just enough to resolve appropriately for modern audiences."The Black Fox" by Emma Bull and Charles Vess is a surprise comic book! Like most of Emma's work, it's well researched and well told. Like most of Charles's work, it's very well drawn and annoylingly lettered. I mean, sure the lettering is beautiful, but it's a little harder to read than the more classic style. Maybe it's just what I'm used to, I don't know. Anyway, it's a good retelling of a classic folk song and again tweaked so as to be accessible to modern readers. I enjoyed it. "Byndley" by Patricia A. McKillip is pretty much a classic McKillip story. The writing sparkles and the storytelling winds its way through the woods much like the characters it describes. It feels like it should be a novel, yet, at the same time, it's good that it's not. As a novel, it would be ponderous and difficult to get through. As it is, you come in at the end of the story and enough is retold that you understand and appreciate it. It's done well and well done."The Lady of the Ice Garden" by Kara Dalkey was another retelling of "The Snow Queen", and I must admit that Kelly Link's version has spoiled me forever. Had I not read that one, I would have thoroughly enjoyed Dalkey's version. As it was, there seemed to be something missing. Granted, there is a subtlety to Japanese culture that I may be missing due to incomplete historical knowledge, but in the end, I just didn't enjoy this one as much as Link's. So it goes."Hope Chest" by Garth Nix was holy-crap-what-am-I-reading fantastic. It's another foundling story, but is very different from any other such story I've ever read. It takes the interlinked concepts of destiny/fate/purpose and tells a story that is every bit as heartbreaking at Greek tragedy and still unbelievably good (despite being an American Western). It's worth the price of the collection all by itself."Chasing the Wind" by Elizabeth E. Wein was good, but didn't make much of an impression on me. This may have been due to the immediately preceding "Hope Chest", but it could also have been that it was about a time period that doesn't really do much for me, nor does aviation history. I suspect that WWII and aeroplane aficionados would have a very different opinion."Little Dot" by Diana Wynne Jones is about kitty cats. It doesn't really work well as a story, as there are too many things left unexplained and the world isn't well built. Were this a story among other stories set in the same world, it would be better. However, the kitty cats feel real, and that's worth something."Remember Me" by Nancy Farmer is good but sad. It's about families and misfits. Mostly though, it's about being different, as seen by those who are not. It's short and worth reading, so I shall not say any more here."The Flying Woman" by Laurel Winter is an interesting exploration of magic, honor and care taking. There's also an element of "you can't change people", which is a good, though difficult, lesson to learn. In a book full of life lessons, this is an appropriate story to exit on.Taken as a whole, the collection is wonderful, and the only real problem was that it took me five years to get to it (and then two months to write this review, *sigh*). Sure would be nice if there was a subscription model so one could get the latest monthly or bimonthly Sharyn November book without having to track them all down. Sure, tracking things down is fun, but I don't have the same amount of sleuthing time I once did. But, if that's the biggest complaint I have, I guess I'm OK.

Review

For the Back Cover: "In The Firm of the Future, Ron Baker and Paul Dunn create an intellectual challenge for firm leaders. They are truly two of the best critical thinkers today. Together they provide the reader with a wealth of thought-provoking ideas. This is an intellectual masterpiece." —August J. Aquila, Ph.D. Managing Director, American Express Tax and Business Services and Co-Author of CPAs That Sell and CPA Firm Mergers That Work "When I first received my copy of The Firm of the Future I was intimidated by its size and began reviewing the table of contents for the sections that seemed most interesting to me. But, as I am prone to do, I began at the first page. I soon found myself pouring through the book, chapter by chapter. Paul Dunn and Ron Baker have compiled a work that has incredible depth, wisdom, and insight. What I enjoyed most, however, was the conversational tone that makes this book hard to put down. I feel like I have had a personal conversation with wise counselors who understand my business." —Michael C. Knowles, Partner, Frank, Rimerman + Co., LLP, Menlo Park, California For the Front Matter of the Book: Praise for The Firm of the Future "This is an absolutely must read for any business (and that includes accounting practices) who want to be in business in the future - written in a highly readable style and laced with hundreds of practical 'how to' notes and comments this book is a prerequisite business manual for any practitioner of any professional service organization. This really is a stunning book - I've thoroughly enjoyed the philosophy as well as the practical how to and why and will further refine our approach to the business - loved the style and class of the book." —Peter Byers, Chartered Accountant, New Zealand "Excited is probably the most appropriate word for how I felt as I read the book. Excited at the learnings, excited at the possibilities that opened before me, excited at what it would be like to work in a practice with no timesheets, value pricing, passionate team members and clients more than delighted with the "concierge service" provided by every team member. Ron Baker and Paul Dunn have clearly described what the firm of the future MUST look like. They clearly debunk all the old theories and practices of managing and operating an accounting firm and clearly explains the methods and FEELINGS that must exist in The Firm of the Future." —Harry Rosenburg, BKR Rosenberg+Partners, Melbourne, Australia "For many years now, I have utilized and professed within my firm, my working theory, 'Our next new client has to have a thirst for our knowledge and the willingness and ability to pay for it.' The Firm of the Future embraces this theory and provides readers with the sound fundamentals to capitalize on their intellectual, social, and human capital." —Robert A. Gaida, Vice Chairman, BDO Seidman, LLP "Without doubt the single most important book ever written for professionals. It will force the entire profession to question, rethink, and rework everything it does. It's a book that will change your practice and your life—for the better, forever. Thanks to this book the professions will never be the same again." —Steve Pipe, Founder and Chairman, The Added Value Network (U.K.) "I have no doubt that the revelations that Paul and Ron draw run a parallel. Sometimes the answer is obvious, but only to those not already under water that if they stood on their toes they could lift their heads above water, and it needs someone from outside the pool to see it. You have done this, you have the answer, and like all brilliant business findings it is simple, it is available to all, and it is practical. It requires only a willingness to accept, to change and to grow - a willingness that some have and some will never have, as like troglodytes they cannot accept change." —Dr Chris White, Doctor of Business Administration, PhD, MBA, B.Bus, ALGA, CA, FCPA, CFP JP, Partner KPMG, Cairns "For many years Ron Baker and Paul Dunn have been wonderful drivers for change in how professional service firms can become more successful. As a result of their collective wisdom, they have now co-authored a powerful and insightful book that should require many firms to reconsider their strategy. The true benefit of adhering to their New Practice Equation will not only be a more profitable firm but one that will also have a distinct competitive advantage in the marketplace. An absolute required reading for business leaders and managers of professional firms." —Robert J. Gallagher, CPA, President - R. J. Gallagher and Associates, Inc. "Like everything that challenges conventional thinking, this book takes time to absorb. There were many parts that I just had to 'read-over' so that I could filter through the brilliant combination of evidentiary and emotional interplay that Paul and Ron do so well and reveal the truth for myself. The book reads like the early conversations I was privileged to be privy to, and will be touted through the ages as a seminal work on the new evolution of the profession." —Jason Johnson, CEO, Kipara Consulting "The Firm of the Future imparts the accumulated wisdom of two key people who are helping to shape the profession, in a readable, and memorable manner. And wisdom a plenty Paul and Ron have to impart. The profession has a vital role to play if our capitalist system is to continue its enormous record of success, and to prove to the doubters that is universally the best system man has invented for improving the well being of all people on earth, not just those in the wealthy developed nations. Paul and Ron chart the course by which the profession can regain its significance and, more importantly, help achieve the bigger goals, both for the benefit of its own members and the wider world. I heartily recommend The Firm of the Future as a 'must have' guide for anyone in practice." —David Hartley, Director, ElanElan Ltd. "Between the covers of this book are more good ideas than you typically find in a dozen business books. Take notes: you'll want to remember these ideas for a long time." —David Maister, author and consultant "Paul and Ron have brought together their business philosophies under one cover of a book that should be the practice manual in every professional office. It truly is the answer of having the business do the things the professional used to do in a more effective and profitable manner. Who wouldn't want to work in the firm of the future described here?" —Nicholas Newton CA, CMA, Creative Director, Frouin Group "Ron Baker and Paul Dunn have put together the modern almanac of best business practices. Their firm of the future focuses on its intellectual, networking, cultural, and customer-focused capital to build wealth. They demonstrate over and over how making meaning, not just money, is the key to a leader's success. The book is an excellent read for those who want to learn the best-of-the-best business practices proven in the past decade." —Sheila Kessler, Ph.D., President of Competitive Edge and author, Measuring and Managing Customer Satisfaction "The Firm of the Future brings a huge number of great ideas together in one place to provide a road map of what a professional service firm must do to position itself for the future. The book provides key success factors any firm can follow in creating a customer-driven firm." —William Cobb, Cobb Consulting, Houston, Texas "Finally! A book that catapults professional firms to a more sophisticated, more effective approach to management, leadership, and providing value. Any firm that follows the theory and practical advice advocated by Ron and Paul can retain happy and qualified team members, assure growing and loyal clients, reduce the stress of public practice, and reap the benefits of significant profitability." —Martha Sawyer, president of Hudson Sawyer, publisher of Bowman's Accounting Report "It's refreshing to see a book that focuses the accounting practice on who we truly are - and more importantly, who we should be. We didn't learn this trade to have our services discounted and be held to a minute-by-minute gauge of value. Ron and Paul keep your focus on the ball rather than the scoreboard and clearly define our role as 'Intellectual Capitalists,' not bean counters!" —Mark J. Koziel, CPA, Director, Dopkins & Company, LLP "Ron Baker and Paul Dunn have done it again. Living up to their reputation for challenging conventional wisdom, Baker and Dunn present a new paradigm for the professions to understand the dynamic forces at play in the professional practice of the 21st century. The Firm of the Future is a brilliant work that adds a new dimension to the old formula for success in a professional service firm. Baker and Dunn clearly lay out a new road map to help leaders understand the differences between leveraging people and leveraging knowledge; between billing for time and pricing for value; and between doing things right and doing the right things. This new paradigm for the firm of the future will help professionals more accurately plan and structure their firm in a way that acknowledges and capitalizes on today's marketplace, technological opportunities, customer expectations and human capital needs. Any practice leader who wants to ensure success for their organization should be compelled to read The Firm of the Future." —Michael Platt, President & CEO, AccountingWEB "Sometimes, this book takes your breath away with its ambition. Not content with burying a fundamental paradigm of the professions, it offers a new one that challenges all who think about, and care about, their profession to re-evaluate what they do—and why they do it. Brimming with ideas, Baker and Dunn constantly challenge accepted wisdom, but thankfully provide cogent alternatives for your choice. Quotes, illustrations and examples from all sorts of sources drive home points to ensure the book is a fantastic read and will have profound effects on your business—and the rest of your life. The future of the firm you inhabit will undoubtedly be shaped by The Firm of the Future. Ambition fulfilled." — Paul O'Byrne, Partner, O'Byrne and Kennedy, Chartered Accountants, United Kingdom

From the Inside Flap

The professional service accounting firm is being threatened by a variety of factors: new technology, intense competition, consolidation, an inability to incorporate new services into a business strategy, and the erosion of public trust, just to name a few. At the same time, most experts agree that morale in the financial services industry is at an all-time low–an astonishing number of professionals respond in surveys that, if they had to choose their career over again, they would choose another line of work. What happened? How have the once distinguished and proud professions become so beleaguered, and is there any relief for those professionals who refuse to worship the capricious god of the almighty billable hour? There is relief. And promise. And hope. In The Firm of the Future: A Guide for Accountants, Lawyers, and Other Professional Services, visionaries Paul Dunn and Ron Baker confront the tired, conventional wisdom that continues to fail its adherents, and present bold, proven strategies for restoring vitality and dynamism to the professional service firm. A cornerstone of Dunn and Baker’s program is conducting successful transitions to new services that customers value, treating functions such as consulting as extensions, not alternatives, to traditional services. This, however, is only part of a framework aimed at liberating professionals from mechanically pursuing billable hours ad infinitum. Dunn and Baker provide proven strategies for pricing in accordance with value and develop leading Key Performance Indicators that measure success the same way customers do. The authors articulate a new theory of the professional service firm that focuses on the real factors of leverage for the firm of the future, and which tosses the antiquated theory of leveraging people and hours onto the ash heap of history. Topics covered include: Intellectual, human, structural, and social capital Converting tacit know-how to explicit knowledge Total Quality Service Value Pricing Strategic planning Financial model reform Readers will learn how knowledge has slowly but steadily evolved to become the most precious factor in creating wealth, and how firms can leverage this intellectual capital to their benefit. The authors include many real-world examples of firms that successfully transformed their operations from the traditional model into a variety of old and new services that customers value. Take up the mantle. The Firm of the Future dares its readers to not only assume responsibility for improving their own careers, but also for restoring their profession to its former glory.

I met Paul Dunn this past August and he blew my mind. Not only did he inspire me to rewrite the proposals we use in our business, he inspired me to bring him to Madison to speak to our business community. As I read this book recently, my eyes were opened as to what is possible in the world that was based on the billable hour. Now when a prospect says "That's over 650/hr!" I know exactly what to say. Now when someone says I only want to work with the owner of the firm, I know exactly what to say. And more important even than those is the fact that I have learned my place as the owner of a service based professional business. Not to "do the work" but to inspire a great team to provide explicit value to our customer community. If you are in the services and don't read this book, you're simply not paying attention to the value you can provide to your market.

I am a mere law student right now so my opinion can't be informed by years of practicing the principles in this book. Still, I think this should be required reading at every law school. That's a cliche statement but I mean it. Having worked for 10+ years before coming to law school, I have to say I found the billable hour to be obscene when I first encountered it. It just makes no business sense. I am amazed that clients have agreed to it for as long as they have. But countless "experts" have given the billable hour chat in an overpriced $80 ABA book - this goes well beyond that. Once Dunn and Baker get you past the billable hour nonsense, they open your mind to the possibilities. Using knowledge to build multiple streams of income is just brilliant. This book even goes so far as to drop pointers on the interview process. The Firm of the Future is packed with information. It's worth reading slowly and taking notes. I'll be happy to model my own firm on the points in this book. I suspect I won't regret it.

Baker and Dunn certainly get it. This thouroughly researched and insightful book had me breaking out my highlighter, dog-earing pages, reading aloud to my wife. Firm of the Future got me fired up, and dreaming again.Baker and Dunn occupy the same real estate on my bookshelf as George Gilder, Peter Druker,Walt Disney, Harvey MacKay, and Michael Gerber. Baker and Dunn apply the science of economics and the wisdom of GOOD BUSINESS SENSE to professional services in a way that could revolutionize the professional services industries in a dramatic fasion.I apologize for the following trite blurb: "If there is one business book the professional must read, it's Firm of the Future" - but it is true. If you consider yourself "forward thinking" and want to regain joy from your professional service business, this is your book.I sincerely hope that my competition avoids this book; or at best, reads it, forms a committee, and organizes a task force to look into the issues of "value billing." While my competition arrogantly holds thier client's hand, a quiet revolution will be occurring; and the customer will seek a better experience- with professionals who are forming the Firms of the Future. I've read hundreds of business books, from the popular to the technical, economic theory, touchy-feely, to chainsaw management....This book got me excited about being a CPA again! valuable at a time when the profession is going through a credibility crisis.

This book exposes what the authors consider to be an archaic and counterproductive approach to traditional "revenue" based accounting versus would-be "profitability" based accounting. This is a prescription for how accounting can become collaboratively vital to a company's profitability, rather than remain an adjunct transactional function. What's profound about this prescription is that it is based on the same understanding of value delivery so many B2B companies lack: The message of reform, by way of achieving a deeper understanding of purpose and potential, is not just a message accounting firms need to comprehend and act on, it is a message for any company that is out of touch with its marketplace and its own business potential.

This is a very well-documented guide for any service firm. It's also very well written, very insightful and very well researched. It's real deep, complete and full of advice and wisdom from several great minds. I run a corporate reputation consulting firm in El Salvador and this is the most advice-rich book I've encountered in the last five years. I also recommend "the trusted advisor" by David Maister and specially "Managing the Profesional Service Firm" also by Maister.

If you are an accountant, and are somehow blessed with an open mind (which is rare in and of itself), this book will change your practice, your team will love you for implementing it, and your clients will love it! I have tried it and it works!

Great book by Paul & Ron. Really appreciated this at the start of the second year as a firm - with many more to come!

The most practical guidance for practitioners to build and develop a professional firm I have ever seen. The clarity of the text makes the reading very attractive.

Travel books can be a mixed bag, with the narrators themselves sometimes making for unpleasant company on the armchair journey. That is not a problem with "Sahara Unveiled," where author William Langewiesche submerges himself well beneath the thread of the story.Langewiesche, a reporter for "Atlantic Monthly" best known today for his "American Ground" series of pieces on the aftermath of the World Trade Center's destruction, writes in a lean, spare, slightly alkaline style reminiscent of Hemingway that seems to suit his subject, the world's biggest and perhaps most ferocious desert, quite well. It puts one in mind of William Least Heat Moon's travel writing, notably "Blue Highways," with its cultural detours and picaresque, ever-changing cast of characters.Langewiesche starts off by quickly dispelling any myths his readers might have about the subject of the Sahara: "Do not regret the passing of the camel and the caravan. The Sahara has changed, but it remains a desert without compromise, the world in its extreme." He goes on to demonstrate this by trekking through the desert's endless mass and then west to the Atlantic primarily by taxi, bus, and riverboat. It's not clear to me why Langewiesche was doing this (Least Heat Moon had similarly opaque motives), and the locals have questions, too. During one layover in the Algerian town of M'Zab, what he calls "the diving board for the deep Sahara," there is the following exchange as Langewiesche looks for ground transport farther south:"He said: 'Why don't you fly?''Because I want to see the desert up close.''Buy a postcard.''But I want to feel the desert.''It feels bad.'Indeed it does. Sometimes it can even be fatal. Death, human and otherwise, is of no importance to the Sahara, devourer of whole towns and caravans. "The Sahara is not cruel, but it is indifferent," he writes. And it produces a sometimes indifferent people, hard, lean, and fatalistic.People who attack Langewiesche for a lack of political correctness in depicting the Arabs, Berbers, Tauregs, Moors, and others he describes in these pages pay a glowing tribute without knowing it. Langewiesche is one tough writer, unsentimental, not macho but not running for office, either. When he has cause to describe the generosity and kindness of people he meets, he does so. When he runs into less decent folk, he doesn't mince words. He doesn't waste them, either, on emotional outbursts or self-righteousness. As I said at the beginning, he's one author who doesn't get in the way of what he's talking about. His take on the Europeans who come to the Sahara are sharp and cutting. He notes meeting a miserable French couple collecting scorpions and tales of injured superiority in Algeria, a former French colony: "She was a Parisian, and too young to remember the old Algerian war. But she had picked up the old colonial habit of talking about the Algerians as if they were not present or didn't understand French. Similarly, she wore a short skirt and a sleeveless shirt, and through the thin fabric displayed her nipples in disregard of local sentiment. And now she sat drinking French wine. These were not acts of indifference, but aggression. And Algerians understood the difference."The best thing about "Sahara Unveiled" is it never sits still for long. Langewiesche can spend a few pages talking about the fate of a misguided missionary in the 1800s, then bring things back to the present day with an analysis of Taureg separatist violence. He analyzes the different types of dunes formed by Saharan sand, how the desert resembles an ocean, and how it does not. He relates folk tales and the anatomy of a camel. Using plainspoken and approachable prose, he manages to take deep stock of a variety of subjects, make his point, and move on.The last leg of the journey is a quick one, perhaps because Langewiesche was taken ill (from drinking the water, a classic tourist mistake). He doesn't wrap it up as well as he should have, but the rest of the book is too good to begrudge him anything for that. Complaining the author left you wanting more is not much of a complaint, is it?You will enjoy this account of nature at its extreme, and the people who live in it. It is an armchair journey worth taking.

A bit too much navel-gazing from time to time, but I found this book fascinating overall. A very enlightening mix of geography, human interest, biography and analysis. I'm about to make my first trip to the Sahara, and it seemed like I was getting the "feel" for the desert as I was reading this book. Keep a detailed map handy!

I have to agree with the reviewer who comments that Langewiesche scores well on his description of the land but poorly with the people. This was an enjoyable read and visit through the Sahara but all the while I kept thinking that he had a chip on his shoulder regarding the Tuareg/Tamashek people. He refers to the Tuareg as a culture inappropriately romanticized by the Europeans. And while he explores their struggle to retain their customs and independence, he spends little time examining the impact of the creation of boundaries across the lands which they traversed.Beware as well that while the journey is depicted as making it all the way to Dakar, the focus of his writing is on time spent in Algeria.Use this book as a good introduction to the desert. But look farther to learn more about the Kel Tamashek.

Arrived in good condition. No problems

A wonderful book. Beautifully written, and you can open to any page and get caught up in it. Discovered it in the local library, ordered a softcover (in print). The print and bind quality was so poor I purchased a secondhand hardcover, which arrived in excellent condition - worth it for the binding, the paper, the endpaper maps.

I was intrigued by the quote: "The desert teaches by taking away." I've been interested in the desert/wilderness both literally and metaphorically and have found Langewiesche to be a captivating and forthright author and guide. It includes more than geography and climate: history, politics, colonization, border issues, and the ever-present power of water and its necessity.

Halfway through the book and already applying much of the methods discussed. If the rest of the book was blank I would still think I got my money's worth. The book reminds me of the approach old design studios had decades ago when people actually worked together. I think this will follow or parallel the great insights from IDEO

Great book, chock full of techniques to use for your first or not first design sprint. Highly recommend fo IT product managers, new UX'ers, managers (yes, surely there's some of you even if you're in an "agile" organization)

Great foundational reference if you're running your first design sprint. Lots of detailed info, including activity details and expectation-setting. It'll set you up for success!

Good for beginners. Gives you a structured method to hold design sprints

This is a design book that certainly practices what it preaches. Quite readable, well organized and lots of visual appeal. Provides lots of practical tips and steps. Like a fine cookbook, it will allow practitioners to adapt the steps to guide any type of group creative process.

What a great resource! I can't wait to use some of these ideas to expand and improve our design sprints.

Good product, good seller

design sprint is simple and very very smart, it teaches us the meaning of meaningful work. It has a excellent process, framework and practical exercises in order to increase the likelihood of success. The fact that there are no caps in the title show simplicity, elegance and degree of detail in this book......if you are doing design sprints and want ideas or want to teach people in your organization you need this book.

I bought this because of the good reviews- many people stated they had bought several of these types of books and this was the best for prep. However, I am a little disappointed. Yes- there are many practice questions and that does help get the child accustomed to the types of questions. However, there is almost NO instruction whatsoever. There is no analysis as to why a certain answer is the correct answer. That's not helpful because sometimes I can't even figure out why a certain answer is the correct one. Similarly, there is little to no instruction on how to tackle each type of question. Also- I think this might be a problem with the test itself- there are sometimes more than one correct answer to a question (I don't have room to give examples)- but that's a really good reason why an explanation for the correct answer would be helpful- because obviously if we are not getting the correct answer, we are not applying our reasoning as expected (and I am an adult with a doctorate level education- so if I can't figure it out, I'm not sure how my 6 year old child would, even if he is gifted!).

This has been great in preparing my 1st grader for the Cogat test. He was excited and motivated to do the problem solving. I am an elementary school teacher and think this is a great resource. With each question I would have him explain why he chose that answer and he liked explaining to me his reasoning. Many times it was in ways that I hadn’t seen myself, but made sense once he showed me his thinking. I could see his confidence building and his excitement. The questions seem to get more challenging as they progress. It’s great they start out more simple to build understanding and confidence. He would ask to do more. I feel confident he is prepared in at least the type of questions he will see on the test.Follow up: he took the Test last week and passed. He was excited that it was the same type of questions and he felt confident.

We ordered three different prep books to get our first grader ready for the CogAT, and this was definitely our favorite. Good questions and pictures, lots of helpful instruction and tips. He thought this one was the most fun..

So this is way better than the testing mom cogat prep book ... It is in color and only has about 8 pages of instructions... There are about 30 questions for each phase of the test (testing mom had 16 questions)... Is it everything you need to prep, no BUT it is a good place to start... It will let you see (and allow your child to see) the type of questions asked... Then you can go online or to your library and find similar questions... Would I buy it again... Yeah I would ... Is it an end all be all test prep, nope, but it's pretty good...

This is the best of the competitors for Grade 1 CogAT testing. The numbers of problems is slightly scant - they should add in a few more. The book is appealing. Some of the questions are slightly poorly vetted (eg, multiple possible answers), but on the whole this is a good place to start - and if you only do one book, this is the one.

Great book to prepare for cogat test for first grade. I wish it would have included more practice questions and more than 1 test... kids need more practice, and I expected to get more with the price of this one.

My son said this test prep was just like the GT testing they did in school! We don't have his results yet, but hope he passed!

Serves it's purpose. Seems a bit brief, my 1st grader breezed through it. There are about 2 pages or so per topic. The questions are really easy, but then the last few are more challenging. A few of the challenging ones did not necessarily make sense and there is no explanation. It was a good introduction to these types of "puzzles" but I wish it were longer. I will probably order another workbook from a different publisher.

Anyone who suffers from body dysfunction and pain must read her book. HEALTH / EXERCISE “The New Rules of Posture is a good adjunct to bodywork of all kinds, from chiropractic and osteopathy to Pilates and yoga. Read it thoroughly, let it soak into your experience--your body will thank you.” --Thomas Myers, author of Anatomy Trains “Few things are as overlooked and yet absolutely critical to our health and well-being as our posture. Mary Bond offers information, stories, and tools for learning how to stand and move with ease and elegance.” --Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., PT, author of 30 Essential Yoga Poses Many people cause their own back and body pain through their everyday bad postural and movement habits. Many sense that their poor posture is probably the root of the problem, but they are unable to change long-standing habits. In The New Rules of Posture, Mary Bond approaches postural changes from the inside out. She explains that healthy posture comes from a new sense we can learn to feel, not by training our muscles into an ideal shape. Drawing from thirty-five years of helping people improve their bodies, she shows how habitual movement patterns and emotional factors lead to unhealthy posture. She contends that posture is the physical action we take to orient ourselves in relation to situations, emotions, and people; in order to improve our posture, we need to examine both our physical postural traits and the self-expression that underlies the way we sit, stand, and move. The way we walk, she says, is our body’s signature. Bond identifies the key anatomical features that impact alignment, particularly in light of our modern sedentary lives, and proposes six zones that help create postural changes: the pelvic floor, the breathing muscles, the abdomen, the hands, the feet, and the head. She offers self-help exercises that enable healthy function in each zone as well as information on basic ergonomics and case histories to inspire us to think about our own habitual movements. This book also is a resource for Pilates, yoga, and dance instructors as well as healthcare professionals in educating people about postural self-care so they can relieve chronic pain and enjoy all life activities with greater ease. MARY BOND has a Master’s degree in dance from UCLA and trained with Dr. Ida P. Rolf as a Structural Integration practitioner. She is a movement instructor at the Rolf Institute and teaches movement workshops nationally. The author of Balancing Your Body, she has also published articles in numerous health and fitness magazines. She lives in California.

I can't believe I only found this book now. I struggled with back pain and posture problems for many years despite being an athletic, gym-going, healthy-weight guy in his 30's. I did searches on Amazon and tried so many things -- Alexander technique, Feldenkrais, yoga, somatic meditation, and much more. I picked up bits and pieces which seemed to help, but I couldn't find anything that explained *all* the components of good posture and how they all fit together. Finally, while researching books on Rolfing, I found this book. I just finished reading it and it is literally the holy grail of posture. Finally, someone is actually explaining *all* aspects of posture, not in a handwavy new-agey way but with plenty of references to scientific papers... but also admitting and embracing fully how much posture is related to emotions and attitudes. It explains the theory but is also chock-full of exercises for both discovery and practice. And this knowledge is so vitally important and can affect so many aspects of your life, it deserves to be read by *everyone*, seriously. When I was trying to understand my back pain, one of the first books I came to was the top result on Amazon for "back pain", specifically "8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back" by Esther Gokhale. Not only did that book not help, but it actually made things *worse* (e.g. her advice to center weight over the heels, or to breathe more with chest and less with belly, both of are terrible and contradict what Mary Bond teaches, and don't even get me started on Gokhale's truly bizarre "kidney bean" standing which actually left me in pain for a week). It really bothers me that Gokhale's book is currently ranked #4,000 while Bond's is ranked #30,000.If you're reading this review, buy this book -- if you read it and practice the exercises, it will literally change your life.

This book was suggested to me by a highly regarded body worker. It is not your average book on correct posture or ergonomic workplace tips. This book teaches you how to engage with the world through your body in a light, effortless manner. The suggestions can challenge your ideas of how our minds, bodies and environment relate. By following the suggestions years of subtle habits of tightness and self-consciousness slowly fade and a more fluid way of moving in the world emerges.I am 62, male, have worked blue collar and white collar jobs. Had poor posture since childhood.I am more comfortable and am more interested in interacting with my surroundings than just wanting to feel a bit less stiff in the morning.

This book treat posture not as a problem that can be mechanically "fixed" by doing some exercises (e.g. wall stands) but as an expression of our bodies. To me it was very helpful to understand how different zones in our body contribute to our posture and how doing simple exercises when can change it.It can be dense in medical terms (I used a dictionary a lot) but you get a clear picture how your body works. So much more than just a book on fixing a posture.

An extremely clear guide to facilitating change in the body through simple changes in posture and movement. Don't let the simplicity fool you. What Mary Bond is teaching is very effective. Good illustrations too.

I was always a bit skeptical of all these vaguely new age-y fitness books. Then I reluctantly started doing Yoga after a car accident a few years back. Long story short, yoga really helped me a lot, so after that I read some books like these. I'm still a bit skeptical of these books, but it turns out some of these people are onto something - like the author of this book. Buy it. It's great. If you've been injured and you read it, there's a decent chance it'll help you recover better once you're done healing if you're anything like me.A lot of the fitness field of late is nonsense about chakras and auras and whatnot that seems to be making it up as it goes along, but this book is the real deal. It has exercises and activities that work, it promotes bodily awareness and wonderful insight into ergonomics through real-life examples. No chakras (OK, a little about chakras, I think) or auras or Mayan 2012 anything here. The author is a dance instructor with a Master's degree who really seems to have a way with explaining this stuff and how to be more aware of your body. She is also very aware of anatomy and the book often has good pictures to show what she's talking about and which muscles are involved. Most importantly, her methods work.I was running slower than usual and I wasn't doing very well on my squat. No clue why. Then I read this book. I realized that after an ankle sprain a few months ago, I'd still been holding on to the rails on stairs, ramps, etc even though the ankle on that side had healed. I consciously altered that behavior. Before, I hadn't even realized it.Back to adding weight to my squat and jogging up and down the stairs (I didn't even notice I'd stopped doing that!). The closest analogy I can come up with is when I teach kids reading skills and they have that "uh-huh" moment where they finally comprehend what they read as they do it. That's how I felt after reading this and started to think about how I sit and stand and walk as I do it and how I could make it better. The wall exercise was really interesting in demonstrating the pelvic floor. This book teaches you body awareness skills. Simple, but really quite profound stuff.Highly recommended to anyone who likes to stay fit. Helpful in setting up office ergonomics, too.
