I've read many books on legal injustice; this was one of the most difficult to deal with emotionally. The book tells a story of well-meaning people -- mostly black -- who were caught up in a firestorm of a punitive, vindictive judge and a merciless press determined to report a scandal.Shari Robinson was innocent, based on the facts. Her first grade class took tests that didn't count toward any assessments for her or the school. She'd been ordered to erase "stray marks" on the test booklet; it seemed reasonable, so she did. By the time the trials began, she was out of the school system. But many of her fellow educators lost everything -- their licenses, their homes and their reputations. The judge insisted on sending many to prison. Shari escaped the first round of sentencing because she was pregnant; at the close of this book, she's appealing a one-year sentence followed by probation. The judge promised some people reduced sentences if they'd admit they'd done wrong and apologize -- even if they hadn't -- but handed down stiff sentences anyway, even when the prosecution recommended less time.The prosecution apparently relied heavily on teachers and principals who would testify against their colleagues; when this happens, false accusations are inevitable.A few voices dissented; a prosecutor told the Journal-Constitution that it was unusual to publicly accuse people of criminal activity without grand jury indictments.Shari herself realized some bad apples existed, but wondered how someone could go through 3 tests, change the appropriate answers for every student, and complete the paperwork. One person “confessed” to slitting open the package of tests and resealing with a cigarette lighter. The charges read like a kangaroo court (my word); in one case a defendant was accused to acting alone to agree to a conspiracy.And to put things in perspective, she writes about the “naked hypocrisy” of public figures who cried about the damage done to these poor children, who would be “cheated out of a decent life.” While a few administrators did cheat, “most teachers were doing the best they could” with too few resources and too many children with serious problems. As she says, real estate “moguls” and financiers were appropriating funds that were earmarked for education.The trials were expensive for the court system and devastating to the defendants. They did nothing for the children. It’s a tough book to read. We tend to think that we in the US support justice, in contrast to past and present totalitarian regimes.I live in Philadelphia. After reading this book, it’s tough to walk past historical monuments that proclaim the slogan enshrined in the pledge of allegiance: “liberty and justice for all.” It’s a reminder that we must always be vigilant and speak out against injustice, which can arise in even the most unlikely of contexts, harming some of the people most dedicated to selflessly helping others.

Part memoir, part history lesson, part courtroom drama, this book had me outraged on every page. The authors' weave a deeply personal story with a meticulous account of the history of the destruction of thriving Black communities and schools in the name of "urban renewal," which we learn is code for segregation and lining the pockets of rich developers and a handful of other powerful interests. This book should be required reading for anyone who cares about justice -- education justice, criminal justice, racial justice. This is a critically important story that needs to be heard far and wide.

I don’t believe everything I read, and if I do I check it with a several reliable sources.Most of the time.I’m also a big supporter of public education.None of the Above: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Public Schools Cheating Scandal, Corporate Greed, and the Criminalization of Educators by Shani Robinson and Anna Simonton was an interesting as it was informative, it actually tells two stories though. One that of Mrs. Robinson who was charged as one of the teachers who allegedly changed the grades of her students to conform with standardized testing requirements, the other is about the circumstances that caused public schools to be considered failures.I will start with the second part, as it has to do with the reasoning behind schools changing grades. The book goes to blame politicians working together industrialists, as well as “do gooders” (mostly evangelical Christians) who are rich enough to have their voices heard as to the issues with public schools. The politicians and industrialists set out to take over poor neighborhoods, demolish them, and build more expensive residences (and thus higher tax revenue), at the expanse of the lower socioeconomic class who are mostly African American. The rich “do gooders” mainly want vouchers and charter schools as a form of subsidy (one might even say government welfare) for private schools.The part where Mrs. Robinson claims her innocence, is where my cynicism takes over. Not that I think Mrs. Robinson is guilty, I’m simply not convinced either way and this book is very one sided in that regard (please note that I have no reason not to believe her). The part about her short teaching experiences, trial, and the media circus that followed, even though it is from her point of view, is fascinating and I did feel as if her and her friends got steam rolled over by an overzealous prosecutor. I feel justified in saying that because out of all the teachers that were prosecuted none where white, or rich, even though it was proven that the rich white districts “cheated” by a larger margin than the poor ones.Also, a twenty year sentence for changing scores on a test?Even if true, it is outrageous.This book, I felt, is a short, incomplete introduction to a much larger problem. The conclusions the authors reach are very important to our society and justice system and do deserve a longer, more thorough book or most likely a series of books.

UNTIL I got acquainted with this book, I had no idea how terrible the plight of 35 Atlanta teachers. Corporate testing apparatus is crazy. Everybody hates it. So what if certain erasures were made on test forms!! A very minor justice problem, but 34 black teachers were charged and lost their jobs! I grew up in Georgia, so glad not to have to live there today in the midst of this racial carnage! Author Shani Robinson is a highly intelligent young teacher whose fate not yet determined! I say "Put the school system in jail and this terrible judge!" No harm done by these teachers. Put the corporate money men in jail for their abuse of students and teachers in the testing empires! Thanks to Anna Simonton for helping to tell the bizarre story of these attacks on black teachers. See the two authors speaking on DemocracyNow for February 14.
