This wasn’t a book I was really suited for. It’s slow paced and lyrically written. “Sedate” might be a good word to describe it. I had to struggle to keep with it.Three strange women arrive at an inn, searching for a wizard two of them once knew. The story’s told from many different perspectives – the women, the innkeeper, the stable boy, a boy who’s searching for his dead fiancee, and a shape shifting fox are the main POV characters, although there’s a few others like the barmaid or the pot boy. Some of them have very distinctive voices – the fox and the innkeeper’s chapters were always interesting for this reason. Others blend together. My appreciation of the book varies by scene. There was one truly excellent sequence where Lal, one of the women, used the power of storytelling to win a fight. However, the ending was very mystical and vague, sort of like a Robin McKinley book. Then there was something like twenty pages spent on a (non-graphic) multi-person sex scene that felt largely unnecessary. It is very well written. If there’s one thing about Peter S. Beagle, it’s that he can write. But I kept catching myself drifting away whenever I was trying to read it. It was hard for me to stay focused on the text. There’s probably a lot of thematic stuff that’s flying over my head, and to understand it I’d probably have to read it again, which I won’t be doing. There’s definitely people out there who would like this book. I’m just not sure who. People looking for a strange, dream like fantasy novel? People who prefer books focused on characters over plots?

I was surprised that a Peter S. Beagle book went out of print, but after reading it, I can see why--it was too far ahead of its time. Protagonists of color, no-big-deal gender swapping, same-sex love, strong female warriors, sex as a normal adult activity instead of a major plot point--this book needs to be made into a movie! I did find the shifting perspectives annoying, the story is told from the first-person views of many of the characters, and I thought it changed around too much. But the characters themselves are wonderful, and I want to read more stories in this world.

The Innkeeper's Song is a masterpiece in multi-perspective story-telling. In it Peter S. Beagle lays out a mostly linear narrative from the alternating perspectives of the lead and key characters. Because of this, the reader is treated to an unparallelled vision of each character's prejudices and viewpoints as the action unfolds.Storytelling aside, the story itself is powerful, set in a richly familiar and expansive world unburdened by technology - with plot elements that are at once familiar (making it easy to read) and refreshing (making it worth your while) - all with a realism borne from Beagle's extraordinary ability to develop characters that think and act the way real people due in extraordinary circumstances.A truly excellent book I would recommend to anyone who loves a good story.

Three women show up at an inn. They are on a quest to find their master, dragging those who are at the inn into their adventure.I would give this a 4.5 rating as it is a superbly written fantasy book. The characters are unique and complex, making this much more than just a fantasy adventure story. It's much more about the personalities that people this world. I liked the alternating perspective in this instance because they all had a unique point of view that was worth reading about.I would highly recommend this story.

It's a rich wonderful Peter S. Beagle world, what's not to love!As a side note this book was very important to me as a teen - a fantasy novel with black women characters that were capable and magical in their own right. What a find for someone like me who looked to Camelot and never saw a reflection, never had a face in Narnia, and lacked representation in the Prydian Chronicles. I thanked him at a book signing for including women of color into his worlds, and thanked him again for his total acceptance that all races need to be in fantasy novels.

The Innkeeper's Song is a Peter S. Beagle (The Last Unicorn) novel with a gripping writing system of each chapter being a story told by one of the people/creatures in the cast of characters. We get to see many points of view of the same situation as well as getting to know each of the individuals personally from their own perspectives. It is a very satisfying read. The sequel, Giant Bones, which is actually a collection of short stories about the world in which The Innkeeper's Song happened, is also good, but The Innkeeper's Song is great!
