This book touches upon such a wide swathe of material, a better title would be something like, "Web Development Industry.. for dummies". The author discusses not just the job of the designer, but also the jobs of those who write the copy (text) of the site, graphic designers, media specialists (video, audio, or flash), web developers (front end), programmers (back-end), and the Information Architect -- the individual who lays out the blueprint which all other team members follow in building their contribution to the project. Because it is not unusual for a web developer to fulfill all these tasks themselves, this is quite handy.It is not levels of detail and exhaustion that make this book great, it is the scope covered along with the readability and insight. However, let it be known that this book does not go in depth into the principles of design. So if you are looking for that, look elsewhere. I will say this though, the most exciting parts of the book are chapters Seven through Nine, which sorta deal with principles of design. And as the author states it, "If you're not a graphic designer, this chapter is really for you." In short, this book is just so well tailored for this industry and such a smooth read, that any novice in this industry should read this book -- there is no doubt in my mind.I've never boughten a "dummy" book. (Is boughten a word?) I was a child when the series first came out. Even then, I always had the impression they were not very good books -- probably because the simple yellow and black looks cheap, along with the weird goth-boy mascot. And, it doesn't help that the title of the series creates the impression that the reader is of the lowest of the lows in terms of intelligence. So when I ordered this book, I wasn't expecting much. I bought three other books on design at the same time, this one turned out to be the best of them. And not only that, this book is in the Top 3 of my favorite computer-related books.The reason I consider this book a classic is because of the depth of insight the book touches upon and the frequency in which it does so. The content of the book doesn't rely on current technology, but speaks to principles of professionalism that are timeless. The book also discusses the lingo of the business: RFPs, pacing, dependencies, wireframes, pushing pixels, noodling, gold-plating, scope creep, comps, et cetera. The book mentions an HTML attribute value I wasn't even aware of (rel="canonical", and that after having read a thorough 500 page book, Elizabeth Castro's "HTML and CSS". Another example of the depth of knowledge the author has over the topic is an explanation of Google's search engine algorithm and how it may opt to read text instead of the description meta tag. Again, this wasn't mentioned in the other book. And another thing, as I happened to just now flip to this page, this book does a wonderful job on the topic of font choices. It's not even close to an exhaustive discussion, but what the author has to say (and show) is insightful.On top of it all, the book reads very easily. Doubtless, this is partly due to the nature of the book. But there is an inconspicuous nature to the book who's expression is an unlaborously flowing prose. The writing style is wonderful -- flowing for non-technical persons, but not unsubstantial for computer literate programmer types -- there is plenty meat to chew on the bone. Albeit, if, like me, you are a programmer, you'll be whizzing through the pages. The author excels at keeping the discussion on topic. The author's personality naturally is evident in the writing but not overt. Every once in a while, you see a brief bubble of overt personality, which was always in good taste. This book was a delight to read.It is amusing and probably suitable how such a classy book is contained in such a ugly wrapper. Often when grabbing the book to start reading, I'd chuckled within myself, imagining how the author probably felt about the cover of her book. In conclusion, it's possible that I was completely wrong about these "dummy" books all these years, that they have always enjoyed a starling reputation for quality prose. But one thing is for sure, I am now much more inclined to buy me another book from this company. They really have a jewel in production of this book.
This is NOT a beginners book. It is for the advanced user, who is already familiar with Design, programming basics, and various tools of web design.NOT FOR BEGINNERS!
I am hoping to learn a little about web design, but I think even this book for dummies may be above my capabilities, but it is still well done.
Not very good, more pictures than texts and examples weren't very clear either, really not a helpful nor instructional book, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
