It does provide information, but I think he could have made names and relationships a bit clearer. Still, it was readable. However, the author appears to be a bit racist and sexist. He seems to be unaware of this, but (for example) when you describe men as being like women in a pejorative way, it feels like he wrote this in the 19th century.
Like many others I learned about Augustus Caesar in one of two of the many history classes that I had in school, but I found out as I read this book that I really didn't know much about the man and his times. The transition of the Roman Republic into the the Roman Empire was not a thing that was predestined. It took a very special man to create the new polity. This book gives the reader a clear idea of how Augustus was the right man to end the many years of chaos that Rome had suffered from during the dying days of the republic. It is a very thorough account of this historical era.
Balanced reportage of Augustus’ life and reign. Lots of facts, but emenatly readable. Good read for any Ancient Rome buff.
What an engrossing book. And we think modern day politics are rough. The Romans were experts when it comes to intrigue and political corruption. A very good and interesting book.
An excellent and in depth look at a complicated man. Who in his rise to rule Rome showed many sides to his nature both good and bad. A terrific read.
Great book that explains the inner workings of the Roman Empire. Not aware before reading the book of the continual warfare and continual civil unrest
I greatly enjoyed this book. Mr. Firth clearly presents the context for the "Prince" Augustus' s life, careeer, and accomplishments. He also makes this self-contained man come alive with real personality, flesh and blood. I recommend it highly.
It was a very good read of how a one rise to emporia from being a foot soldier to a general and more.
